Polymorph is one of new generation of commercial polymers set to have major impact on model making and prototyping. This polymer has all the characteristics of tough ""engineering"" material yet it fuses and becomes easily mouldable at just 62°C. It can be heated with just hot water or hairdryer and moulded by hand to create prototypes and solve manufacturing problems currently outside the capacity of other materials.

A 5 mm dia. x 12 mm (when closed) spring made from shape memory alloy (NiTi). At room temperature this spring is soft enough to pull out to approximately 50 mm by applying a small force. When heated to 70°C by passing an electric current through it, the spring contracts to its original length with useful pulling force (equivalent to lifting 0.5 kg weight).

This remarkable alloy melts at just 61°C but, unlike the most familiar low melting point alloys, does not contain lead or cadmium. It is a relatively hard and extremely tough alloy that has a wide variety of scientific and manufacturing applications. It is used for example to fill small tubes for bending without crushing, casting for models and jewellery, and for making precision moulds. Although relatively expensive because it contains the rare element indium, Field's metal makes a fantastic demonstration of how several constituents, each with much higher melting point, can be combined to produce fusible alloy. Note: indium has risen in price recently because of its use in LCD TV screens. It 'wets' and adheres to many surfaces hence the propensity of Field's metal to adhere to plastics. Approx. 10 g.

With no wheat, gluten or nut oil, this is the most widely used type of glue used to stick paper and card in schools. It dries to a clear finish and is washable.

This laser emits an intense monochromatic red beam of wavelength 630 nm at 0.9 mW (Class II operation). Typical beam divergence is approximately 1 millirad. The laser is ideal for the demonstration of the behaviour of light in a visually effective way, reinforcing the practical work carried out by pupils using white light. It is an essential tool to develop basic understanding of the passage of light through different media, slits etc. The laser beam can be modulated by applying an external digital or analogue waveform to the 3.5 mm jack socket on the rear panel.
